Town of Falmouth
Wastewater and Nutrient Management Projects

Welcome to this website for the Town of Falmouth's Wastewater and Nutrient Management Projects.

Like many Cape Cod towns, Falmouth treasures its beautiful ponds and coastal estuaries. As Falmouth has grown, the health of our ponds and coastal waters has deteriorated due to excessive nitrogen loading, primarily from septic systems. The Town has undertaken several important projects to protect our water resources, including the Falmouth Wastewater Facilities Plan (completed in 2001), the Ashumet Plume Nitrogen Offset Program (primary evaluations completed in 2001), the Falmouth WWTF Upgrade and Expansion Project (completed in 2005), the New Silver Beach Wastewater Collection and Treatment Project (completed in 2009), the many Massachusetts Estuaries Project (MEP) Technical Evaluations to document the nitrogen limits to our estuaries (many completed and several are ongoing), and
The Comprehensive Wastewater Management Planning (CWMP) Project for the South Coast Watersheds (on-going).

The purpose of this website is to provide information about these projects and related issues. We hope that this information, in association with a focused wastewater education program, will inform the Town's citizens about wastewater planning and the need to implement additional wastewater and nutrient management facilities. The Town will need an informed public as we make decisions on the future wastewater facilities and request Town Meeting appropriations to implement them.

Please visit What's New to learn about the release of reports, community meetings and other new information. You can learn about all of the wastewater and nitrogen management projects and read or download project documents as well. You can learn more about Nitrogen and Nutrients or read more at other Links, such as learning how the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) and the Massachusetts Estuaries Project (MEP) establish the nitrogen limits for our coastal ponds and estuaries.

The CWMP

The Comprehensive Wastewater Management Planning (CWMP) Project for the South Coast Watersheds is Falmouth's ongoing project to identify and prioritize sewer service areas for the Little Pond, Great Pond, Green Pond, Bournes Pond, Eel Pond and Waquoit Bay watersheds. We hope you will revisit this site for project updates.
